George Talbot was one of the long-term owners of one of our beloved local pubs.

The Talbot ‘dynasty’ managed one of our beloved local Cemetery Junction pubs for around 30 years (starting around 1891). You now know it as ‘Hope and Bear’ but if you have lived in Reading for a while, you will remember it lovingly as ‘The Jack of both sides’ and more recently as ‘Abbott Cook’.

A ‘German band’ used to play here in 1913, ‘one outside the pub and two inside’.

A black and white photograph of a postcard 'Jack of Both Sides' public house also showing is the Simonds pub sign in the background. Wording beneath the image reads: With the compliments pf H.L Talbot Telephone; Reading 61512 (Photo Walton Adams)
